China’s trade with South Africa is currently characterised by low value chain good such as textiles and garments. The challenge which these lesser priced imports pose to the domestic manufacturing sector is significant. However, most of the impact has already been felt in the industry with COSATU charging that over 60,000 jobs have been lost in this sector as a result of competition from China. But as China’s economy continues innovate further, so its export profile will change from low to higher value chain goods.

My visit to Beijing this past month coincided with the Beijing international auto show. Despite being a relatively new event on the circuit, the Beijing show is already Asia’s largest. Showcasing the newest models from both multinational as well as Chinese auto firms, the show reflects the large and rapidly growing consumer market in China.
